The synthesis and study of macromolecules of increasing molecular
complexity is a very active research domain in close relation with the
development of molecular materials for nanosciences and nanotechnologies.
In recent years, highly-branched (combs) and hyperbranched (dendritic)
polymers have gained widespread attention due to their original structure
and unique bulk and solution properties, which strongly differ from
their linear counterparts. This is explained by their large number of
terminal functional groups and their intrinsic structure and shape.
Although characterized by a lower degree of branching compared
to dendrimers and dendrigrafts, comb polymers still possess a
highly compact architecture and a high number of chain-ends and
thus are attractive substitutes since they can be much more easily
prepared.
